In my classroom, the rules are easy to understand and the students have hand motions they use to help remember them. Additionally, positive incentives are the heart of my classroom management system. The students work as a team to win rewards by earning smiley face points in a group effort to prevent the frowny faces from winning. As long as the smileys win, the students enjoy a group reward (e.g. treat) at the end of each day.
Meanwhile, the students work to earn (e.g. following rules, being on-task, helping others, etc.) individual rewards by earning tickets that can be cashed in each week for rewards (e.g. seating preferences, treasure box items, trampoline time, write with a pen for a day, extra computer time, read to the class, etc.). The rewards are valued at varying amounts of tickets from five to 50. As the students "cash in" tickets for rewards, their tickets are put into a bucket for a weekly drawing (e.g. 50 ticket value).
In contrast, the consequences for breaking classroom and/or school rules vary according to the offence. For example, talking without permission would cost the offending student(s) a ticket. However, if the student(s) runs out of tickets due to multiple offenses, then he or she would start to lose recess time. After that, it would be time for parental involvement.
